Georgie Cunningham
began her career as a graphic designer and then found
that her interests in hand papermaking, fiber, and
weaving were taking her in an entirely new direction.
She now spends her studio time making paper and
creating woven paper tapestries, handmade paper
screens, and wall hangings.
Using rich, bold color
and repeating patterns, Cunningham weaves her handmade
paper with mixed media and other paper. Her love for
the Silk Road cultures has influenced not only the
appearance of her work but also the manner in which it
is created. She believes every part of nature is
precious so nothing should be wasted. All her scrap
bits of paper and fiber go back into the vat to become
new sheets—water used for soaking becomes dye.
Even though many of her
pieces represent specific places or events, Cunningham
believes that art is individual and private. She does
not expect others to have the visual experience she
had in creating them, but rather one of their own.
Thus, artist and viewer share in the artistic
experience.

Country, signing
her works only on the
back so her signature does not detract from the
viewer’s artistic experience.
